The Emerald Pools Trail is one of Zion’s classic trails and one of the park’s most popular. The trail follows a small stream that collects in a series of three pools – Upper, Middle, and Lower. The vegetation along the stream makes for an oasis in the desert. The trail is paved to the Lower and Middle Pools and with some help those in wheelchairs can access the Lower Pools.
Lower Emerald Pools
The trail begins near Zion Lodge. Enjoy the shade of the large cottonwood trees as you follow the trail along the Virgin River. In about one half mile the trail passes along an alcove and under two waterfalls with the pools below.
Middle Emerald Pools
Past the alcove the trail begins to get more difficult. You will gain about 100 ft / 33 m in elevation and head up to the top of the cliff you walked under. At the Middle Pools are the streams that form the waterfalls.
Upper Emerald Pool
This section of the trail is more strenuous and is a little over a quarter mile long. As you approach the Upper Pool the trail winds around large boulders and makes a steep ascent. The Upper Pool is a great spot to find some shade to sit under and eat lunch.
Trailhead
The Emerald Pools Trail starts at either Zion Lodge or The Grotto.
