Canyon Overlook Trail

The Canyon Overlook Trail is one of Zion’s short must do hikes. This trail is one mile round trip and gains little elevation along it’s journey. Your reward when you arrive at the overlook is a spectacular view.

The Canyon Overlook Trail begins near the east entrance of the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel. The parking area for the trail is small and fills up fast, especially during the summer season. There is an overflow parking area a bit further up the road. Be alert when crossing Route 9 to get to the trailhead because there is usually a lot of traffic.

Along this trail there are steep drop offs but railings do offer you protection. The trail surface varies from sand to slick rock, and there are spots where you must cross a wooden bridge.

From the overlook you get a great view of Pine Creek Canyon with Lower Zion Canyon in the background. In the distance you can see some of Zion’s other prominent features like the West and East Temples.

Trailhead

The trailhead is near the east entrance of the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel. Parking for the Canyon Overlook Trail can be tricky.

From Lower Zion Canyon there is a small parking lot to the right as you exit the tunnel. If this parking area is full a second parking area available up the road and to the left.

From the east entrance there is a parking area about two-tenths of a mile from the tunnel entrance. The parking area across from the trailhead IS NOT an option as no left turns are allowed.

This is a high traffic area! Be alert when trying to get to the trailhead.
